A cup of Candid – with The Business Den: Vikram Patwardhan, Founder and MD, VAMA Event highlights changes in the event management industry and what it takes to run a successful business.

 
What inspires you to get to work each day? 

I deal with very senior doctors and professionals who are well informed and well-travelled. I get to experience and meet new personalities each day. The very fact that everyday throws up new challenges and teaches me something new inspires me to work each day.

 
What do you work toward in your free time?

In my free time, I focus on organizing, planning and brainstorming on the next work season. Work is my passion, so I’m never off it really.

 
Who has inspired you in your life and why?

I take inspiration from Dhirubhai Ambani who started as a petrol pump employee and moved on to become a business tycoon. Also Manohar Joshi and Narendra Modi inspire me. They all came from a very small family and have worked their way to the top through sheer determination and hard work.

 
To what do you most attribute your success? What would you say are the five key elements for starting and running a successful Event Management business?

Patience
Politeness

As an Event Management professional, how do you think has the GST affected the Indian Financial system?

There are smaller teething troubles but on the whole, it will surely benefit the economy and will also curb malpractices and tax evasion. GST has presented many challenges in our field since we plan events pan India.Since there is central GST and a state GST, getting an offset is an issue. Time and experience will help streamline this effectively.

What are the changes you wish to see in the Event Management industry, five years from now?

I’d like to first want better infrastructure followed by skilled manpower and more government support.

 
With the onset of the artificial intelligence revolution, do you think the Event Management landscape will change?

Event management is a very dynamic industry and changes constantly. And hence, ideas and services have to keep changing and upgrading with time.

 
What’s the one interview question you would ask before hiring an employee?

I generally don’t judge people over interviews. Finding the right candidate for the right job is a process and it only gets perfect with time and experience. A particular question during an interview doesn’t really reveal much. Body language and confidence is what I look for.

 

Lastly, share with us one thing that not many people know about you. 

My colleagues and clients know me as a very soft spoken and calm person. However, in my personal life, I am extremely hot-tempered and aggressive. I can change roles from professional to personal and vice-versa very quickly. My wife often says when in office and at home, I wear different caps.
